Kyle A. Gurley, Ph.D.

With over a decade of patent law experience, two first-author publications in Science, and a prior career as a tenure-track biology professor, Kyle finds great reward in collaborating with clients to bridge the science/law gap.

SENIOR PATENT AGENT

Kyle A. Gurley, Ph.D.

In addition to his experience in patentability assessments, patent procurement, management of complex global patent portfolios, and support in assessment and analysis of third-party patent rights, Kyle has hands-on experience with both domestic and global adversarial proceedings, including U.S. interference, European and Indian oppositions, and invalidation trials in Japan and China.

He enjoys that patent law presents complex scientific and legal issues. For example, Kyle worked as a core member of a large global team to secure and defend CRISPR/Cas9 intellectual property all over the world, including the U.S., Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Eurasia (EAPO), Europe (EPO), Hong Kong, India, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom.

“Because patent law is complex at both local and global levels, it requires creative strategic thinking as well as attention to detail.”

Kyle also enjoys working as a team both for and with clients to add value to their portfolios.

“The attorneys and agents at BFF have tons of experience in both science and law, and are truly outstanding to work with. We make a great team. Our focus is on providing value to the client, and crafting work product that is nothing short of excellent.”

He strives to understand and respond to the client’s needs and to establish reasonable and practical expectations, which helps inform strategic decision-making.

Kyle pairs a solid, fundamental understanding of biology with a desire to help others grow and protect their ideas and innovations. He works with a range of clients and inventors, from start-ups to universities, and from graduate students and postdocs to industry scientists, professors, and Nobel laureates.

“I enjoy intellectual collaboration and I learned early on that I enjoy going the extra mile to help others achieve their goals. I understand the effort, time, discipline, rigor, and sacrifice that scientific work can demand, and I work hard to honor the trust others place in me with their inventions.”

NOTEWORTHY
Before embarking on a career in patent law, Kyle earned his PhD from Stanford, published two first-author articles in Science as a Postdoctoral Fellow, and ran his own research lab as a tenure-track Professor at the University of Pittsburgh.
