Shweta Chandra, Ph.D.
Shweta’s extensive scientific background combined with more than 15 years in life sciences patent law allows her to devise and execute strategies which maximize the value of the patent portfolios of clients ranging from start-up companies to academic research institutions.
SENIOR PATENT AGENT
Over the course of her career, Shweta has worked with clients in every aspect of global patent procurement and portfolio management across a range of life sciences sectors including gene therapy, vaccines, virology, immunology, antibody therapeutics, stem cell therapeutics, diagnostics, blood glucose monitoring devices and diagnostic devices, and life science reagents.
Shweta believes critical to success is making sure she develops a solid understanding of the invention, the relevant aspects of the technology, and the client’s business goals—which can only be accomplished by establishing an open and communicative relationship with inventors and clients. She finds that developing a close working relationship is especially important during the initial phases in analyzing an invention disclosure.
“In order to prepare the best possible patent application, I make sure I understand all aspects of the invention and the relevant technology: from the specific embodiments in the working examples to all potential commercially important variations and applications as well as the closest prior art and the closest competitors’ activities. Having a relationship with inventors and clients built on trust and teamwork is key to being able to gain this level of understanding, and ensures they do not hesitate to ask any and all questions of me. This relationship is important not only to get the best application possible on file, but also to ensure they are comfortable sharing their short-term and long-term business objectives, and to update me when there are new developments.”
Shweta has experience in assisting a wide range of clients, and appropriately tailoring the patent strategy to their needs whether the client is an inventor, start-up, research institution, licensee or publicly traded company. She has grown patent portfolios from the ground up, as well as taken on mature portfolios with multiple patent families filed worldwide.
In addition to Shweta’s skills in strategic development of patent portfolios, she also has experience in supporting work to identify and navigate third party patent landscapes. Shweta has worked with BFF’s attorneys as they assist clients in freedom to operate searches and analyses, and preparation and analysis of third party patent landscapes.
Shweta has also found great satisfaction in working with junior practitioners and technical advisors in the firm.
“I find it rewarding to be able to bring a junior person onto the team to ensure an excellent work product is generated efficiently and as cost-effectively as possible, and to see the talent that junior people bring to a project. It gives me a chance to give back by doing what others did for me when I first started in patent law, and to see others catch on and do well.”
NOTEWORTHY
Before moving to the U.S. for graduate school, Shweta conducted anti-malaria vaccine research at the International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB, New Delhi, India), and co-authored a publication on that work.
