PATENT AGENT

Nicholas D. Cervenka

His ability to maintain subject mastery, paired with his intense drive to understand how things work down to the most minute of details, has equipped him with a proverbial toolbox of skills, effective in protecting the most intricate of inventions and navigating the most convoluted of patent landscapes.

Initially majoring in environmental studies, Nick’s love of puzzles quickly drew him to the engineering department where he approached academic and personal projects alike with unbridled passion. Whether it was learning multiple mathematical models and coding languages to build bass-controlled party lights, or creating an auto-purger for his bioengineering lab so that he could conduct larger experiments, Nick demonstrated a tenacity and creativity in addressing problems that greatly impressed his professors—earning him multiple teaching assistant positions along with high academic honors. It is this same creativity and passion that make Nicholas an invaluable asset to clients through every step of the patent prosecution process.

“When I begin working on an application, simply understanding how the invention functions isn’t enough. I want to know why everything works the way it does at a fundamental level. Where every equation is derived from, the laws and theories governing every mechanism. I want to know how one potential modification would affect every other aspect of the invention in every relevant circumstance. And once I build an understanding of the invention from the ground up, my goal is to identify every possible application of the invention. To me, the whole process of drafting an application is a series of exciting puzzles. I feel extremely lucky to have found a career where I can make a living learning new things and solving puzzles.”

Nick has experience working in a variety of collaborative contexts, spanning from research groups to collegiate rugby and cheerleading teams. This experience has proven to be extremely useful in coordinating between the various players that are a part of the patent process.

“I really enjoy being part of a team. Where everyone has their part to play, and other team members' victories are your own. When I begin working on a new case, it feels like I join a team with the inventors. They’ve created this amazing thing, and now it’s my job to protect it. Like any team, clear communication and transparency are essential. Further, like any team, emotions are infectious—and I often can’t help but get caught up in the excitement and passion inventors have for their inventions.”
