Michael J. Blessent, Ph.D.
Michael aspires to understand the broad strategic needs of his clients, as well as the details of each particular matter. A doctoral chemist by training with an interest in economics and business, Michael’s technical and patent experience ranges from small organic molecules and industrial chemicals to medical devices, carbon sequestration, and nutraceuticals.
PATENT AGENT
Michael brings to his patent practice the insight and perspective that comes with hands-on research experience in both academia and industry. He also brings a business-oriented mindset from his time in the private sector and his studies of economics.
Michael’s scientific career began as an undergraduate, where he conducted research on solid-state nanoparticles for the hydrogen economy. He next worked in petroleum refining and wastewater treatment at the Chevron Corporation. His love for research led him back to school to earn his Ph.D. in organic chemistry. His doctoral research centered on the mechanistic design of catalytic systems for making cleaner-burning automobile fuels and various organic compounds.
Upon finishing graduate school, Michael’s passion for scientific writing, new technologies, and business led him to the field of patent law, and joining BF&F.
“Although I found research rewarding in many ways, I also craved scientific diversity and a career where I could communicate new and exciting science to others. Patent law has granted me the opportunity to do both of those in an environment of cutting-edge innovation.”
Michael’s patent practice has included not only synthetic organic chemistry and pharmaceuticals, but also a variety of other fields such as neurosurgery devices, carbon dioxide capture, fluorescent dyes, polymers, laboratory test kits, and nutraceuticals.
In addition to patent drafting and prosecution, Michael also supports efforts in navigating third-party patent landscapes and evaluating third-party patent rights. He has teamed with BF&F’s attorneys to assist with freedom to operate searches and analyses, IP due diligence, and the analysis of third-party patent claims.
“As someone who once considered a career in management consulting, and who also studied economics as an undergraduate, I find it particularly rewarding and enjoyable to understand how each patent family fits within a client’s overall business strategy, and to craft an IP strategy that best fits their needs and goals.”
NOTEWORTHY
An early indication of his commitment to those he serves, Michael received the William Rieman Award for Outstanding Teaching Assistants from the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology while a graduate student at Rutgers, an award given in recognition of exceptional performance in undergraduate teaching.
